How Many T-Shirts do I need?

This is the question I get asked the most about making a t-shirt quilt. It’s a very complex question, so let’s dive into the answer.

The number of t-shirts you send determines the final size of your

t-shirt quilt. My favorite size quilt is 60″ x 90″ which is roughly the size of a twin flat sheet. It is the perfect size to spread out on the couch or can easily be used on a twin sized bed. I recommend at least 20-25 shirts for this size.

Can I include more than just t-shirts?

Yes! Most fabric items can be incorporated into a t-shirt quilt.

  • T-Shirt

  • Polo

  • Sweatshirt or Hoodie

  • Sports Towel

  • Embroidered logo from a bag

  • Necktie

If you have something you’d like to include, but aren’t sure about let me know and we can decide together!

What kind of backing do I use?

I prefer to use wide backing fabric found at quilting and sewing stores, because it makes quilting on the longarm much easier.

There are several choices for backing materials; cotton, minky, and flannel. My go-to for many years has been flannel, but it is getting very hard to find.  On your intake form you will select your backing preference. We will discuss a color or theme you’d like for the backing. I will search all my favorite stores and give you a couple of options to choose from. Once you make your selection I’ll take care of the rest!

Backing is included in the cost of the t-shirt quilt but there is an extra $20 fee for minky. (Trust me it's worth it! 95% of the quilts I make for my family are backed with minky because we all love how soft it is!)

What does a t-shirt quilt cost?

I charge $12 per square foot, measured from the finished quilt. This price includes the backing as described above, batting, and a finished quilt. In short, you provide the t-shirts and other items for the quilt top and I’ll take care of the rest.

Using my favorite size 60"x90" your cost would be around $450.00

I require a $200 deposit when t-shirts are delivered. This will apply towards the final cost of the quilt.
